FLORENCE, Ala., - North Alabama Medical Center recently held a hands-on demonstration of the latest da Vinci Xi surgical robot in the main lobby. Onlookers were allowed to get up close and personal with the machine and even control it from a test console during various simulations.
NAMC currently has two da Vinci robots in use, and has performed more than 2,200 robotic surgeries since 2013.
The machine is FDA approved for general, thoracic, ob/gyn, colorectal, or urological-related surgeries. Controlled from a separate console in the same room with the patient, the surgeon has the ability to guide the equipment in minimally-invasive fashion through tiny incisions. The benefits of the da Vinci surgery include shorter hospital stays, less blood loss, fewer complications and faster recovery times.
The event drew approximately 300 people throughout the day.
